Workers’ Perceptions and Attitudes Towards the Trade Unions: The Case of Eskişehir

ABSTRACT

The unions have been loosing their current and potential members due to some internal and external factors in all over the world. External factors which affect the union density rates negatively can be characterised by globalisation, unemployment, flexibilasiton, sectoral shifts in production and employment, increasing labour force participation of young and female workers. These external factors also provoke the internal factors which are based on union-member relationship and attitudes and behaviours of members towards the unions. In these sense, the paper will basically depends on the research that comprises both unionized and nonunionized workers’ perceptions and attitudes towards the unions at metal, food, textile and petrochemical-rubber private sectors in Eskişehir. Aims of this paper can be summarised as follows: – To find out social, economic and demographic features of worker in metal, food, textile and petrochemical-rubber private sectors, – To find out how the workers defines their identities religion, social class, nationality, etc. and experiences of union membership which trade union do they member, what are their source of information about unions, etc. , – To discuss the perception of workers on necessity of being a member to the unions, – To analyse the understanding of workers on union policies and the member-trade union relationships, – To examine the opinion of workers about whether the unions can protect the workers’ rights or not
