ABSTRACT
Democrat Labour Party which established in 1950 and erased from political life in 1954 was a moderate left labour party. The party of which all founders, except its president lawyer Orhan Arsal, composed of workers couldn’t became a powerful and lasting labour party. The party failed both in organizing workers and general elections. Despite this failure it has created some traces that followed by the later labour party: Turkish Labour Party of 1961. There are no direct organisational ties between these two parties, however both have some intersections and priorities. Orhan Arsal, Üzeyir Kuran and İbrahim Güzelce, founder and leaders of the party, played important roles in Turkish politics and trade unionism. Democrat Labour Party that identified itself “party has used its all effort to create politically powerful working class movement” had a moderate left/social democratic identity. The party had a unique approach in terms of relations between trade unions and the party. The party rejected political involvement in trade unions, and criticised trade unionist under the influence of mainstream politics as “labour aristocracy” and “pseudo unionists.”The party has been ignored in labour historiography, because of its political weakness. However, it has remarkable traces to evaluate and understand the 50’s labour movements and Turkish Labour Party of 1961.
